A Journey Through Genres, Sound Design and Workflow

Every time I sit down with an artist in their creative space, I feel like I’m stepping into a private world. It’s more than just instruments, software, or gear—it’s a reflection of how they think, feel, and shape their art. In this episode of Inside the Studio, I had the chance to spend time with Ruben Lombroso, diving deep into his influences, his approach to sound design, and the unique workflow that drives his music.

Blending genres without limits

One of the first things Ruben shared with me was how much he refuses to be boxed into a single genre. His music is shaped by a wide spectrum of influences: the pulse of electronic atmospheres, the organic energy of grooves, and even hints of experimental sounds. Sitting with him, it became clear that this eclecticism isn’t just a stylistic choice—it’s his way of creating a language that feels fluid and alive, always evolving and never static.

Sound design as a craft

When we started talking about sound design, Ruben’s passion became undeniable. For him, sounds are not simply found, they’re built. He takes raw elements—synths, samples, even accidental noises—and sculpts them with care until they become something unique. Watching him describe the process felt like listening to a sculptor talk about clay: each layer, each modulation, each subtle detail brings the sound closer to his vision. It’s this craftsmanship that gives his productions such a distinctive character.

A workflow designed for creativity

Another part of our conversation that struck me was Ruben’s workflow. Creativity might feel spontaneous from the outside, but inside his studio, it’s supported by structure. From the way he organizes his equipment to the step-by-step process he follows in building a track, everything is arranged to keep ideas flowing. He explained how inspiration can come from anywhere—a melody, a texture, a rhythm—but it’s his method that ensures those sparks actually become finished music instead of vanishing half-formed.

The balance between technique and inspiration

Perhaps the most powerful insight Ruben shared was about balance. As he put it, too much focus on technique can suffocate spontaneity, while relying only on inspiration can leave you with unfinished sketches. His way of working lives in that middle ground: mastering his tools and techniques while keeping curiosity and play at the heart of the process. It’s a reminder that artistry isn’t about choosing between discipline and freedom—it’s about weaving them together.

A glimpse into his creative world

What I loved most about this studio session is that it wasn’t just a technical breakdown, but a window into Ruben’s artistic mindset. Watching him at work, hearing his reflections, and seeing how he interacts with his sounds gave me a sense of the intimate dialogue between discipline and imagination that fuels his music. And that’s what I hope comes across in this episode: an invitation not just to learn from Ruben’s process, but to feel inspired to experiment, cross boundaries, and develop a voice of your own.
